      Siddhantic Proof: Spashta (True Longitudes) v.52

      Sanskrit (Devanagari):

      दूरस्थितः स्वशीप्रोचाद्‌ ग्रहः शिथिलरश्मिभिः । सव्येतराकृष्टतनुर्भवेद्‌ वक्रगतिस्तदा ॥

      Translation (Burgess):

      When a planet is far from its Sighra-uchcha (conjunction), it is pulled backward... and becomes retrograde.

      Modern Technical Commentary:

      The physical model of retrograde motion. The Siddhanta describes planets as being pulled by 'reins of air' (vayu-rashmi) attached to their conjunction points. When the planet is far enough (near opposition), this pull reverses its apparent direction.
